In six countries across the Global South—Brazil, Ecuador, India, the Philippines, Uganda, and Tanzania—women and gender-diverse human rights defenders (WHRDs) are navigating an increasingly repressive digital landscape. APC’s upcoming research explores how digital authoritarianism and technology-facilitated gender-based violence (TFGBV) are silencing dissent, reinforcing patriarchy, and threatening the safety of WHRDs. Through legal analysis and firsthand accounts, this study takes a deep dive into the deep entanglement between online violence, state and corporate surveillance, and the erosion of democratic space. It also highlights how WHRDs are resisting—reclaiming digital space, demanding accountability, and calling for feminist, holistic protection frameworks that reflect their realities.
